Tottenham fans are desperate for a huge move to atone for their woeful summer transfer window, and reports in Spain claim Mauricio Pochettino wants to sign Marco Asensio.
What's the word?
According to Marca (via Sport Witness), Tottenham are looking to reinforce their squad in the January transfer market, and Pochettino is a big fan of Asensio.
The report claims Pochettino wants to bring the Real Madrid wonderkid to North London, but has been rebuffed in his efforts thus far.
Asensio is valued at a whopping £81m by Transfermarkt, and if Daniel Levy decides it is finally the time to splash the cash then this could be his greatest signing yet.
Why would he be a good signing?
Attacking midfield is perhaps the one position where Tottenham have relatively strong depth, but signing Asensio would be capturing one of the world’s finest young talents, not just another name to improve the depth.
The 22 year-old scored some absolutely crucial goals during Real Madrid’s run to the second of their three consecutive Champions League wins, and his versatility means Pochettino could use him on the wing or in behind Harry Kane as a number ten.

He is an excellent dribbler and chance creator, and one has to imagine Kane would have an absolute field day with the likes of Asensio, Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen behind him.
The 20-cap Spaniard already has 36 professional goals and 38 assists to his name, and his ability to create moments of magic out of nothing would be a tremendous asset in tough games against deep, defensive teams.
Levy owes the fans a proper welcoming present after all the delays with their new stadium, and splashing the money he didn’t spend in the summer on Asensio would be his first genuine superstar signing at the club.
