Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino handed Erik Lamela a rare spot in the starting line-up against bottom club West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns on Saturday, but Spurs fans destroyed him on Twitter for his performance in the opening 45 minutes with the scoreline goalless.
The 26-year-old came into the starting line-up in place of Son Heung-Min as Pochettino switched to a 3-4-2-1 formation against the Baggies, but he struggled to make a positive impact with a number of poor passes, as well as giving away cheap fouls.
It was just the seventh Premier League start of the season for the attacker in what has been another injury-hit campaign, but he hasn’t taken his opportunity thus far.
Tottenham supporters, who have been having their say on speculation linking them with Ryan Bertrand and Alfie Mawson, were quick to have their say on Lamela’s display via social media, and while one said “I’d rather have Sissoko playing than Lamela”, another simply said “get Lamela off”.
Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…
I’m not joking I’d rather have Sissoko playing than Lamela.
