Tottenham Hotspur play host to Arsenal in the latest episode of the North London derby at Wembley on Saturday, but Spurs fans aren’t expecting key defender Toby Alderweireld to start despite his return to action against Newport County in midweek and the fact that he has declared himself available for selection.
Mauricio Pochettino had been without the Belgium international since he tore his hamstring in the 3-1 win against Real Madrid in the Champions League on November 1, but the 28-year-old finally made his long-awaited comeback in the FA Cup fourth round replay tie against the League Two side on Wednesday.
However, he certainly isn’t guaranteed to come into the XI for the clash against the Gunners, considering he is unlikely to be risked for three fixtures inside a week having only just returned from injury, with a Champions League trip to Juventus to come on Tuesday night.
Tottenham supporters were quick to have their say on the Belgian centre-back’s possible involvement via social media, and while one said “I think he might be saved for Juve”, another said “think he’ll keep Toby for Juve”.
Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

I think he might be saved for Juve but I might be wrong

Surely play same team that stomped Man U? Toby in vs Juve when being Savvy will count.

I’d have to say keep Sanchez purely down to pace reasons… don’t want Toby having to make lots of sprints on that hamstring… Juve is massive midweek and Toby is a sure thing for that…

Think he'll keep Toby for Juve. The team deserves not to be changed, and Trippier and Davies aren't wing backs

I like this starting 11. While the team is 100% healthy, everyone is not fully fit. For this reason alone, I don't think Wanyama and Toby will start. Especially with Juve in less than a week. I wouldn't complain if the above 11 started, though.

never going to happen, tricky game sat against arsenal toby has to start ahead of sanchez but he prob keep toby for juve

Need to ease Toby into XI slowly. I would rather keep him rested for Juve away.

Toby will be saved for Juve I expect
