Tottenham fans have taken to Twitter to react in disbelief after Erik Lamela blazed their side’s best chance of a point over the crossbar on Monday night against Pep Guardiola’s champions, on a horrendous pitch that was still reeling from an NFL hangover.
The Argentine, who has been in excellent form of late, had Ederson’s goal at his mercy with Spurs pushing for a well-earned point against Manchester City. After substitute Dele Alli robbed Riyad Mahrez and rolled the ball into Lamela’s path, everyone inside Wembley held their breath as they anticipated the ball hitting the back of the net.
However, whether it be down to the atrocious Wembley turf, or the former Roma man’s own failings, the newly introduced hi-vis Premier League ball found its way into row Z as Mauricio Pochettino looked on despairingly.
The miss, which compounded the north Londoners to their third loss in the league this season, summed up Spurs’ failings on a night where City were there for the taking. Despite recording their best ever start to a Premier League season, Pochettino’s men now sit five points off the top of the table and are seemingly lacking the ability to put their stamp on games.
Let’s take a look at some of the best tweets that following the 26-year-old’s horror miss…
Deserved a point last night! Winks changed the game when he came on. Sissoko prob his best game for Spurs if only he had a football brain he be quality! Again gave away a gift goal. Lamela miss I will blame the pitch. We move on! #thfc #winks
