Toby Alderweireld has claimed that he never wanted to leave Tottenham Hotspur in the summer despite the constant speculation surrounding his future.
Alderweireld was strongly linked with a move to Manchester United during the summer transfer window amid suggestions that the central defender was keen to leave.
Alderweireld has regained his position in the Tottenham XI this season, but his future at Spurs is still far from secure.
Indeed, a clause in Alderweireld’s contract means that he will be free to leave his current club this summer if a bid of £25m arrives.
The 29-year-old has been commenting on his future at Tottenham, and insisted that he did not want to leave the club ahead of the 2018-19 campaign.
The Spurs supporters have since been reacting on social media, with many calling for the 6ft 1in defender to pen a new contract having returned to favour under Mauricio Pochettino.
A selection of the Twitter reaction can be seen below:
Get him a new contract then

Shame he didn’t say it at the time.
Regardless of that, great to have him back and playing passionately.
