Toby Alderweireld is prepared to run down his contract at Tottenham Hotspur in order to force a move to Manchester United, according to The Mirror.
The 29-year-old defender has been linked with a move to Manchester United all summer as Jose Mourinho looks to strengthen his defence.
The Belgium international has been at Tottenham since 2015 and has become a rock at the heart of their defence under Mauricio Pochettino.
However, with Spurs keen to keep hold of their talent and demanding £75million for his sale, it now appears that Alderweireld is prepared to force a move to Old Trafford by any means possible.
According to the report, he has one year left on his current deal, but Tottenham have the option to extend it by a year, but enacting this will activate a release clause of £25million.
Tottenham are stuck between a rock and a hard place here, not knowing whether to sell their star defender now for big money or try and keep hold of him only to sell him on the cheap next summer.
If Alderweireld is dead set on the move then perhaps it is worth cashing in now, because his mood might affect the rest of the camp if he is forced to stay on for an extra year.
If they conclude the business quickly, Spurs will still have time to bring in a replacement but it’s a risky game for Pochettino and he’ll have to decide whether to stick or twist.
