Tottenham Hotspur fans have been sending their best wishes via Twitter to their former player Ryan Mason, who has been forced to retire from football at the age of 26.

The midfielder announced in a statement that he has been advised by medical professionals not to return to competitive action due to a serious head injury.

Mason suffered a fractured skull during a collision of heads with Chelsea defender Gary Cahill while playing for Hull City in January 2017.

The injury was operated on immediately and since then, the midfielder has been working his way back to health.

Mason had hoped to play competitively again but he has since learned that there would be too much of a risk if he did so.

The Englishman, who earned one cap for his country, came through the ranks at Tottenham.

After graduating from the academy, Mason had various loan spells, including stints at Yeovil Town, Doncaster Rovers, Millwall, Lorient and Swindon Town.

After failing to land a regular spot in Spurs' first team, Mason left in 2016 to join Hull.

Tottenham fans have always been fond of the midfielder, and they were quick to react on Twitter when he announced his retirement.
