Tottenham Hotspur have slapped a £75m price tag on Toby Alderweireld as negotiations get underway with Manchester United, according to The Mirror.

What's the word?

Spurs fans have been deliberating for some time about where Alderweireld's future lies, but it is growing more and more likely that he will not be at the North London outfit next season.

In fact, The Mirror reports that United have opened talks with Tottenham regarding a deal.

It is believed that Spurs are demanding £75m for Alderweireld due to the fact that Virgil van Dijk was sold to Liverpool from Southampton for the same price in January.

It is in the club's best interests to sell this summer as The Mirror claims that a clause in the Belgian's contract means that he will be able to leave for just £22m next year.

Are Tottenham demanding too much?

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is certainly no pushover when it comes to transfer negotiations, and based on past windows, this deal could end up being a drawn-out saga.

In general. £75m for a defender seems ludicrous, but with the current market, United cannot have any complaints about Tottenham demanding such a figure.

Van Dijk raised the bar with his move to Liverpool, and it is warranted to put Alderweireld in that bracket due to his quality at the back.

If there are numerous clubs interested in the Belgian, who has been capped 74 times for his country, then Spurs hold the power.

However, there is slight pressure to sell in the next few months due to the clause that will come into effect next summer.

If nobody is willing to meet the £75m asking price, then Tottenham may have to lower expectations.
