Wages often dominate football conversation when transfers are mentioned in the gossip pages, but with Tottenham Hotspur it seems to be a regular talking point.

The club are known to have one of the most modest salary structures in the Premier League, with Harry Kane said to be the highest earner on £100,000 per week.

A recent report in the Daily Mail claimed that the reason behind Toby Alderweireld’s delay in signing fresh terms is that he cannot come to an agreement with the club over wages.

The publication reports that the defender wants close to £200,000 a week but Spurs are unwilling to meet his demands.

A story in The Times has now raised some eyebrows, as it has been reported that chairman Daniel Levy had a pay bump of around £4m last year.

The Times claim that the businessman’s salary rose from £2.84m to £6m across a 12-month period, which the newspaper states has left some of the players stunned.

Given that the club seem reluctant to meet certain player’s wage demands, news of Levy’s tidy sum could potentially cause friction.

However, some fans are looking at the situation differently, and have suggested that the chairman deserves a bigger salary than the players.

Others took aim at the media.
