Tottenham Hotspur should hijack any West Ham return for Dimitri Payet

According to reliable club insider @ExWHUemployee on Twitter, West Ham United have been offered the chance to re-sign attacker Dimitri Payet, and their arch London rivals Tottenham Hotspur should be watching developments closely.

What’s the word, then?

Dimitri Payet leaves the field in tears

Well, @ExWHUemployee says that the Frenchman’s agent got in touch with the east London club to see if they would be interested in bringing the 31-year-old back to the London Stadium with Marseille needing to sell players.

The club insider adds that Payet would be keen to return to the English capital having solved the personal issues that saw him return to France in January 2017, although he also said that a deal appears unlikely right now.

If the France international did link up with Manuel Pellegrini’s men, he would likely be a replacement for Manuel Lanzini, who is expected to miss most of – if not all of – the 2018/19 season because of an injury he picked up while on international duty with Argentina.

Why should Tottenham be monitoring the situation?

Well, Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino may well be looking to strengthen his squad and add some further quality to his side before the transfer window slams shut on August 9, and that could include in attacking areas.

The Argentine manager, who must look to hijack Everton’s bid to sign a Barcelona star, may want more competition and strength in depth for the likes of Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli, while he may feel that he can sign an upgrade on Erik Lamela and Lucas Moura, who both found starts hard to come by in 2018.

With Premier League experience already under his belt and 10 goals and 24 assists in 47 appearances in all competitions for Marseille last term, Payet has the ability to make an impact for Tottenham right now, and perhaps that is what they need if they want to get trophies now.
