Tottenham Hotspur’s version of the Oscars backfires on Twitter

Many would think that the 90th Academy Awards would have very little to do with football given that it is an annual ceremony celebrating the stars of the silver screen.

Due to the popularity of the Oscars, Tottenham Hotspur decided to get caught up in the buzz by creating their own version, which included various awards.

On Twitter, the North London outfit asked fans to vote for ‘Best visual effects’, ‘Best supporting actor’ and ‘Best showstopper’, with the nominees being a handful of Spurs players and moments of the season.

Plenty of Tottenham fans played along with the light-hearted feature, while others took the opportunity to bring up diving accusations that have plagued Mauricio Pochettino’s team in recent weeks.

Dele Alli has been the main culprit, with many suggesting that the midfielder has gone to ground too easily in recent matches, particularly when grappling in the penalty box.

In fact, the England international, who signed for the Premier League club from MK Dons in 2015, has been booked twice so far this season for play-acting.

Some rival fans mocked Tottenham’s version of the Oscars by nominating the club for ‘best divers’, and even some of the club’s own supporters joined in.
