Tottenham interest in Nikola Milenkovic proves Pochettino’s faith in Davinson Sanchez

According to reports in The Mirror, Tottenham are interested in signing Fiorentina centre-back Nikola Milenkovic with continued doubts over the future of Toby Alderweireld.

What’s the word, then?

Well, The Mirror says that Spurs are one of a number of clubs tracking the highly-rated 20-year-old, who represented his country Serbia at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

The Mirror says that the north London outfit could face competition for his services from Premier League rivals Manchester United however, with Jose Mourinho potentially keen to reunite him with compatriot and national teammate Nemanja Matic.

The report adds that doubts remain over Alderweireld’s future with his contract due to expire at the end of the current campaign, and while Tottenham have the option of extending it by a further year it would still then include a clause that would allow him to go for £25m next summer.

Would he be a good signing for Tottenham?

He is clearly a talented defender having kept three clean sheets in eight Fiorentina appearances so far this season, while he has shown his ability at the other end of the pitch as well by also finding the net on two occasions.

While there is no doubting the quality and maturity that he has at such a young age, his lack of experience would still surely be slightly concerning – especially if he was a replacement for Alderweireld or potentially even Jan Vertonghen too.

The fact that Mauricio Pochettino is reportedly eyeing him suggests his faith in the 22-year-old Davinson Sanchez, whom he obviously feels is good enough to potentially lead the line as early as next season despite not being the most experienced himself.

It would certainly be an interesting to see him and Milenkovic together, and while they could be naïve at times they could also develop a partnership together at Tottenham for years to come.
