Tottenham Hotspur were reportedly keen to sign Jannik Vestergaard, who would have been a potential Toby Alderweireld replacement, at the start of 2018, but following his moment of madness for Southampton on Saturday they must be relieved that they didn't get him.

What's the word, then?

Well, Italian media outlet Tuttomercatoweb reported in January that both Spurs and arch-rivals Arsenal were keen to bring the Denmark international to the Premier League from Borussia Monchengladbach, but no deal materialised either then or during the summer, when the north London club failed to make a single signing.

The 26-year-old did join their English top-flight rivals Southampton for £18m in July however, but he hasn't enjoyed the best of starts to his career at St Mary's.

He failed to make the best of first impressions to new manager Ralph Hasenhuttl as it was his glaring mistake that led to Cardiff City's winning goal in the 1-0 result between the two strugglers in south Wales at the weekend, when his poor back-pass was intercepted by Callum Paterson, who found the net.

Why should Tottenham be glad they didn't sign him?

While Vestergaard's error against Neil Warnock's men was both awful and extremely costly, it isn't the only reason why Daniel Levy has proven to be right at not moving for the big Dane despite continued doubts over the future of Alderweireld.

Even with his high price tag, the giant centre-back has only started two of Southampton's last nine Premier League fixtures having fallen out of favour under previous boss Mark Hughes, and when he has played he has looked prone to an error and struggled with his positioning, passing and generally just not being physical enough despite his huge frame.

As things stand the 26-year-old doesn't appear suited to English top-flight football, and therefore it looks as though Levy is set to be proven right in the transfer market once again.
