Tottenham may move for Southampton ace, says ex-star

Former Tottenham and Southampton player Chris Perry believes that Mauricio Pochettino’s striker search may lead him to make a move for Jay Rodriguez in January.

The Argentine has Emmanuel Adebayor and Roberto Soldado to call upon as experienced forwards, while Harry Kane is also in the mix.

But the Togolese ace has been inconsistent, the Spaniard has been a flop since his £26m move for Valencia last year and the youngster lacks the experience to be the focal point.

A move for a new option when the transfer window re-opens in January has been mooted, with Rodriguez an option.

Pochettino coached the England international while at Southampton last season and is known to be a big fan of his abilities.

J-Rod is currently out of action with an injury suffered at the very end of 2013/14, but Perry believes that a swoop for his signature after Christmas could happen:

“[Emmanuel Adebayor] doesn’t look particularly mobile and he struggles to play as a lone frontman and unfortunately that’s the way Mauricio Pochettino likes to play. I don’t think he has got the desire to close centre-backs down and run the channels.” He told talkSPORT.

“They need someone more mobile and I know they were linked with Jay Rodriguez in the summer and it will be interesting, if he gets fit at Southampton, whether they go back in for him. I know Pochettino likes him as a player.

“I think Harry Kane has done well in little cameo appearances but I don’t think he’s quite ready to start and lead the line just yet.”
