Tottenham could very well lose Toby Alderweireld in the near future, and reports claim they are eying Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles.

What's the story?

According to Chronicle Live, Tottenham and Chelsea are both still monitoring Lascelles.

Both London sides were linked with a move for the colossal centre back in the summer, as Tottenham were expected to lose Alderweireld.

The Belgian is of course still at the club, but with no new contract in sight they will need a top quality signing to replace him next season.

Lascelles’ leadership qualities could make him the perfect signing, and he could even be a future captain in North London.

The perfect Pochettino move?

It’s no surprise that Tottenham were chasing Lascelles in the summer, as the former Nottingham Forest ace is the perfect profile of a Mauricio Pochettino signing.

The 24-year-old is homegrown, hungry, athletic, smart, and could be the absolute perfect long-term partner for Davinson Sanchez.

Lascelles was handed the captain’s armband almost immediately when Rafael Benitez arrived on Tyneside, and his training ground scrap with Mo Diame last year seemed to kickstart the Magpies’ season.

This sort of no-nonsense leadership at the back could just give Tottenham that extra ruthlessness needed to kick the club onto the next level, and he’s one hell of a defender as well.

Despite Newcastle’s horrific start to the season, Lascelles is winning over four aerial duels per game and making 1.7 tackles, 1.9 interceptions and a remarkable 7.1 clearances per game.

While the Magpies’ negative football this season hasn’t allowed him to show it, he is also comfortable enough on the ball to function in Pochettino’s defence.
