As reported by The Sun, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt this summer.

What's the story?

With the long-term future of Toby Alderweireld at the club in doubt due to reported interest from clubs like Chelsea, Spurs need to be on the hunt for emerging stars who could slot right into their first team.

One player on their radar, according to The Sun, is teenager Matthijs de Ligt.

The paper say he's a £45m target for Spurs this summer, with Mauricio Pochettino seeing the 18-year-old as that replacement for Alderweireld.

Who is he?

Although he made his debut for Ajax last season and featured prominently in their run to the UEFA Europa League final, this term is the teenager’s first full season as a regular in the Dutch side’s starting eleven.

Helping his side in their challenge for the Eredivisie title, he’s contributed to 12 clean sheets this season and shown impressive consistent form for a player so young.

He’s developing well for the Netherlands too, with five caps to his name including two starts in the recent international break against England and Portugal, contributing two assists vs the latter.

All signs point to him being a player with enormous potential and if Tottenham can invest in his future early it could pay off massively for years to come.
