As reported by The Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur won’t be signing Wilfried Zaha this summer after Crystal Palace set his asking price at a very steep £70m.
Zaha had been tipped to be a big money signing for Spurs, helping usher in a new era at their new 62,000 seat stadium, but it appears that’s a deal that is dead in the water.
The Daily Mail report that Palace have told suitors they will not be selling their star man for less than £70m, meaning Spurs will now be looking at alternative options, with Mauricio Pochettino looking for an upgrade on attacking midfielder Erik Lamela.
The paper say that the Spurs boss has £100m to play with this summer and remains keen on replacing Lamela with another attacking talent.
Who should that target be?
Spurs have also been linked with Manchester United forward Anthony Martial over the last week, with The Mail reporting that Tottenham negotiators were planning talks with United decision makers about a potential move.
Although that would also likely be an expensive deal, the young Frenchman would bring more star power, more potential and arguably a more exciting game to North London than the impressive Zaha.
There’s also the potential of negotiating serious value in a deal, with United reported to want £55m-rated defender Toby Alderweireld.
Martial is undoubtedly a talented individual despite his problems with Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford, failing to win a consistent spot in the Portuguese’s starting eleven last season.
With 36 goals and 26 assists in 136 appearances for the Red Devils, he’s definitely made an attacking contribution that could grow at Tottenham.
Pochettino can bring newfound belief, confidence and swagger to the 22-year-old’s game that could help unlock his true potential in the Premier League.
Now the Zaha deal is dead, Spurs should be going all out to secure Martial’s future.
