Real Madrid are interested in signing Tottenham Hotspur winger Lucas Moura this summer, per the Daily Star.

What’s the word?

The Brazil international has enjoyed a scintillating last few weeks of the season, scoring a hat-trick in the second leg of the Champions League semi-final against Ajax to send Mauricio Pochettino’s men into the final; they will face Liverpool on June 1.

He has flitted in and out of the team in north London but he has scored 15 goals in all competitions across 48 games.

Able to play anywhere across the forward line – he has been deployed as a centre-forward, a left winger and a right winger this term – the Star claim that Real are “sniffing around” as they look to expand their squad this summer.

Lucas only joined Spurs in January 2018 – he is the last player to move to the club on a permanent transfer – and has a contract that runs until 2023.

Formerly of French giants PSG, Lucas has won 35 caps for Brazil, scoring four goals.

A new deal needed

Lucas deserves a reward for his genuinely heroic work this season.

His performance against Ajax in Amsterdam has instantly gone down in Spurs legend; were it not for the Brazilian, they may well have sunk without trace in the Netherlands.

And, while his deal ties him to the club for another four years, a show of faith is a win-win for Spurs.

It would prove that he is highly-valued by everyone at the club and would also ensure that the likes of Real face an even tougher task when it comes to extricating him from the Premier League giants.

Of course, it remains to be seen if terms can be agreed; Spurs have a famous wage structure and Harry Kane, the club's captain, is by far the highest earner with a salary of £200,000-per-week.

But negotiations have to be opened, and Lucas has to be kept.
