Tottenham Hotspur must make Watford midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure a priority signing in next summer's transfer window.

What's the word, then?

There is no question that midfield is an area that Tottenham are currently looking at as they prepare for the future.

Indeed, the futures of Mousa Dembele and Victor Wanyama are far from secure, and it is not impossible to think that both could leave at the end of the season.

Tottenham have been linked with a number of midfielders in recent months, but the club should really be prioritising a move for Doucoure.

The 25-year-old has been outstanding for Watford since a 2016 move from Rennes, and he managed seven Premier League goals for the club last season.

The former France Under-21 international has also been in excellent form for the Hornets this term as his reputation grows.

Why should Tottenham sign him?

Tottenham already have a powerful midfield runner in the shape of Moussa Sissoko, but the Frenchman is not really a goal threat, nor is he too impressive when sitting in the middle of the park.

Eric Dier, meanwhile, still fails to convince in the big matches.

Tottenham need a central midfielder capable of sitting alongside Harry Winks in the middle of the park, and Doucoure fits the brief perfectly.

The 6ft ace has the power and energy to get up and down the field, and would have no problems adapting to the instructions set out by Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino.

Watford will, of course, be desperate to keep hold of Doucoure, but there is no question that the midfielder's head would be turned if Tottenham came calling.
