Tottenham Hotspur are one of a number of clubs to be linked with a move for Porto's Hector Herrera, and Spurs must ensure that they win the race for the midfielder.

What's the word, then?

A 70-time Mexico international, Herrera joined Porto from Pachuca in 2013, and has made 203 appearances in all competitions for the Portuguese club, scoring 27 times.

Herrera's current deal with the Portuguese outfit will expire at the end of this season, however, meaning that he will be free to discuss terms with foreign clubs in January.

Herrera is believed to have turned down three separate contact offers from Porto, and looks certain to leave the club in either January or at the end of the season.

Tottenham are just one of a number of clubs to be credited with an interest in the midfielder, and Mauricio Pochettino's side must ensure that they win the race.

Indeed, at 28, Herrera is the perfect age to make an instant impact at Tottenham, and is different to their current options in the middle of the park.

Why should Tottenham move for Herrera?

Herrera, who helped Porto win the Portuguese title last season, impressed for Mexico at the 2018 World Cup, and would bring a new set of skills to the Tottenham midfield.

Indeed, he is completely different to the type of midfielders that Spurs can currently call upon, and his box-to-box energy would be perfect for Pochettino’s style of football.

Herrera is also a sharp tackler and impressive user of the football, and would be an upgrade on Eric Dier in the middle of the park.

Dier continues to split opinion with Tottenham supporters, and despite his strengths, Spurs are not going to win the Premier League title with the England international at the heart of their midfield.

Herrera would be a very clever signing by Pochettino, and it is vital that Tottenham secure the 5ft 11in ace's signature.
