Tottenham are thought to be monitoring Porto midfielder Hector Herrera, and the Mexican international could be the perfect signing to kick Spurs to the next level.
According to A Bola (via Sports Witness), Tottenham sent scouts to watch Porto’s 1-0 win over Tondela on Friday.
This report comes just days after CM Jornal claimed that Herrera has rejected three separate contract offers from the Portuguese giants, with less than 12 months remaining on his current deal.
Add to that the fact that Tottenham were repeatedly linked with Herrera this summer, and it looks like the North Londoners could be in line for a bargain when his contract expires next summer.
Tottenham fans were desperate for a new midfield signing this summer, and with Mousa Dembele and possibly Victor Wanyama set to leave next summer, Daniel Levy and Mauricio Pochettino will have no choice but to pull the trigger.
Herrera is the perfect signing in so many ways, not least of which is that he’ll be available for free next summer, so even Levy will be on board with it.
The 28-year-old was a crucial part of Mexico’s World Cup squad, and does a little bit of everything in the middle of the park.
He is winning 1.7 aerial duels per game in the league this season, while also averaging 2.7 tackles, 1.8 interceptions and 1.2 clearances.
The tough-tackling midfielder is also great at carrying the ball forward and creating chances, averaging 1.5 shots per game and 0.8 key passes per game this season, all while completing 88 per cent of his passes.
Put simply, he is a classic box-to-box midfielder, with all the defensive abilities of Dembele, an unlimited work rate and intelligent passing.
So, Tottenham fans, would you back a move for Herrera next year? Could he be the perfect Dembele replacement? Let us know your thoughts by voting in the poll below…
