Tottenham should make shock January move for Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse

Tottenham Hotspur strengthened their Premier League title bid with a 6-2 thrashing of Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday, and they should look to boost their squad with a surprise move for Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse during the January transfer window.

What’s the word, then?

Well, Spurs are just six points adrift of leaders Liverpool and two points worse off than Manchester City following their latest convincing win, and if they can pick up some more impressive results across the remainder of the festive period then they are in a very good position.

The success has come despite the north London outfit failing to make a single signing during the summer, and manager Mauricio Pochettino may feel that a new face or two in the New Year could give his team the extra boost and competition for places they need for what could be an exciting second-half of the campaign.

Despite the emergence of Moussa Sissoko, Harry Winks and Oliver Skipp this term, the midfield looks to be one area that may need strengthening, given the injury issues suffered by Eric Dier, Victor Wanyama and Mousa Dembele, and with the futures of the latter duo perhaps in some doubt.

Why Ward-Prowse?

Good question, especially seeing as he is struggling at Southampton right now.

The 24-year-old has never been able to strike down a regular spot in the starting XI at St Mary’s despite making 213 appearances for the club in all competitions, and he has only played 10 minutes of football since Ralph Hasenhuttl took over while being left out of the 18-man squad altogether against Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

That said, the one-cap England international has been known as something of a set-piece specialist because of the way he strikes a ball, and Pochettino certainly knows him well having given him 34 Premier League appearances during the 2013/14 season when he was with Saints.

While Ward-Prowse would not be a starter at Tottenham, there is no doubt that he could add something from the substitutes’ bench when they may need a goal, and the likes of Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Toby Alderweireld would thrive on his deliveries.
