Tottenham should snap up Gonzalo Martinez who could be their secret weapon next season

Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing River Plate midfielder Gonzalo Martinez according to Italian news outlet Calcio Mercato.

What’s the story?

The 25-year-old playmaker joined Argentine giants River Plate in 2015 and last season scored six goals and assisted three in 21 appearances in the Primera Division.

The diminutive midfielder is a reported transfer target for Lazio, Everton, Southampton and Tottenham and according to the latest update, his agent has been spotted in England trying to get his client a move.

Is he worth it?

Martinez reportedly has a release clause of £13.25million which makes him relatively cheap considering the state of the market at the moment.

Although South American players have often struggled when moving straight to the Premier League, the likes of Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Aguero have shown it can be done, and Martinez has an Italian passport so doesn’t need a work permit.

He could be a useful player to have in Tottenham’s squad as he is a player that knows how to unlock stubborn defences and find that pass which others don’t, something they have struggled with in recent seasons.
