Tottenham Hotspur attacker Clint Dempsey has claimed that Spurs’ season will be a failure if they do not qualify for next seasons Champions League.
The American international scored twice as Spurs were cruelly knocked out of the Europa League at the quarter final stage after penalty shoot-out heartache in Basel on Thursday.
Dempsey has come under some criticism this season for failing to reproduce the form that made Spurs beat Liverpool in the race for his signature in the summer.
However with Jermain Defoe and Gareth Bale both injured and Emmanuel Adebayor not playing well, Dempsey has stepped up to the mark in recent weeks.
However the 30 year old knows that all of his and his teammate’s hard work will be pointless if the North London club cannot hold onto a top four spot.
Arsenal are chasing Spurs down in the battle for the Champions League and if Bale is out for the season, it could be an uphill battle for Tottenham.
“We have to make sure we finish in fourth place and make sure we’re in the Champions League next year,” Dempsey told talkSPORT.
“That’s the only thing we can do to salvage this season and say we had a good year. That’s been the goal for the season. It’s important that we get into the Champions League.”
