Tottenham Hotspur defender Steven Caulker knows a thing or two about defending in the danger area. 21-year-old Caulker, a spokesperson for Puma, showed how to be effective in defence in this short but effective instructional video.
He explains how it’s important to always communicate with your central defensive partner, keep the player on the player out as wide as possible, step in when he’s about to shoot and finally always follow up rebounds; a great watch and plenty to learn for footballers everywhere.
Despite being very young, the Englishman has proved that he belongs at White Hart Lane after shuffling from club to club. He broke through to Spurs’ senior team in 2009 and after loan stints with Yeovil Town, Bristol City and Swansea City, he officially re-joined the club this past season making 18 appearances in a Tottenham shirt.
Caulker looks like being a mainstay in the Premier League for quite a while. One of his highlights to date is starting at Manchester United, a game that Tottenham won 3-2. That victory broke the club’s 23-year winless run at Old Trafford. He also represented Great Britain last summer in the London Olympics and will look to make the England squad for next summer’s World Cup.
Now that he won’t be moving from place to place, Caulker needs to prove himself in the upcoming Premier League season. He’s shown many signs of maturity while bouncing around from clubs between 2009-2012. Caulker is signed on at Spurs through the summer of 2016.
