Spurs are looking to strengthen their defence this summer, with injury concerns over Younes Kaboul and Jan Vertonghen.
But any deal for Bartra is dependent on the Catalan side signing a new centre-back first, with Chelsea defender David Luiz and Liverpool’s Daniel Agger their top targets. However, Barcelona have been told that the duo are both not for sale by their respective clubs.
Bartra is reportedly unhappy with the amount of playing time he is getting for the first team at the Camp Nou, despite the side missing Carlos Puyol and Gerard Pique for chunks of the season. But Tito Vilanova’s decision to play Javier Mascherano and Alex Song in defence ahead of Bartra has upset the 22-year-old, leading to him wanting a new challenge with more game time.
Bartra’s agent expressed his client’s disappointment last season, telling the Spanish press: “Bartra is 25,000 times better than Song as a central defender.”
Spurs could be without Jan Vertonghen for their first match of the new campaign, after the Belgian picked up an injury in pre-season. And while Younes Kaboul looks set to finally return from an injury setback he suffered 12 months ago, AVB still has concerns over his long-term fitness after such a long spell on the sidelines.
Kaboul could play in Spurs’ trip to Crystal Palace on Sunday.
Would Bartra do well at Spurs? Do they need a new centre-back?
