Tottenham up interest in Argentine starlet

Roma winger Erik LamelaTottenham have stepped up their pursuit of Roma winger Erik Lamela, according to reports from the Evening Standard.

Spurs have been linked with the Argentinian international for some time, with Andre Villas-Boas believed to see him as the ideal replacement for Gareth Bale – whose future remains unclear.

With the transfer deadline fast approaching, AVB and technical director Franco Baldini are keen to line up a swoop for Lamela should the Welshman elect to move to Real Madrid.

Discussions between the Londoners and the Serie A giants have begun, with the versatile attacker valued at around £30m.

Tottenham may be unwilling to match such a fee, but are believed to be keen to negotiate with Roma.

Lamela has been hailed as one of the top emerging South American talents for some time, and has even been likened to Barcelona’s Lionel Messi.

The 21-year-old is said to be open to a move away from the Italian capital after Roma failed to secure European football for the 2013/14 season.

Tottenham are also thought to be keen on the youngster’s team-mate, Miralem Pjanic.

The Bosnian playmaker is another man who could be leaving the Stadio Olimpico in the coming weeks and is also seen as an attractive proposition by Villas-Boas.

Tottenham fans, could Erik Lamela fill the void left by Gareth Bale? Or do you need to keep the Welshman?
