Spurs have already invested hugely in their first-team squad this summer, with a number of fresh faces having arrived at White Hart Lane in big money deals.
But, Andre Villas-Boas is still keen to invest further, and sees Coentrao as his top target.
The Portuguese wide-man is believed to be surplus to requirements at the Bernabeu following Carlo Ancelotti’s arrival, and was even speculated to have been offered as part of a deal to take Garth bale to the Spanish capital.
However, any move for the 25-year-old is likely to be separate to this, with his value set at around £15m.
AVB is a big fan of his compatriot, and believes that he would be an upgrade on current left-back Danny Rose.
As well as this, Coentrao is able to play in a more advanced position, which is attractive to the ex-Chelsea boss.
The defender is keen to secure regular first-team football in the build-up to the 2014 World Cup, and Villas-Boas is hopeful that a greater chance of achieving this in London may allow him to push through a late deal.
Could Fabio Coentrao be the final part of AVB’s Tottenham jigsaw?
