Manchester United sacked Jose Mourinho on Tuesday morning following their poor season to date, but his exit could well be good news for Tottenham Hotspur in their bid to keep Toby Alderweireld at the club.

What's the word, then?

Well, the Red Devils have been heavily linked with a move for the Belgium international throughout 2018, and as recently as last week by The Sun, with him being no closer to agreeing a new contract with Spurs, and presumably Jose Mourinho was the mastermind behind wanting to completing the deal given he had said he was not happy with his centre-back options at Old Trafford.

No move materialised in the summer and it wouldn't have been a surprise to see United move for him in the New Year given their struggles this term – they lie sixth in the Premier League table with a goal difference of zero, and are closer to bottom-of-the-table Fulham than they are to leaders Liverpool.

Whoever their new manager – caretaker or permanent – will be, there are certainly no guarantees that they will move for the 29-year-old.

Good news for Tottenham?

It certainly is.

If Mourinho was the man behind wanting to bring Alderweireld at Old Trafford then it is a huge boost for the north London outfit, who is unlikely to be wanted by other Premier League clubs like Chelsea or Manchester City given the options they already have, as well as the injury issues the Belgian has suffered from previously.

Despite those, there is no doubt that the centre-back is a hugely important player for Spurs – as he showed during the 1-1 draw with Barcelona at the Camp Nou last week – and their chances of keeping him at the club may have just been given the boost that they needed.
