Serge Aurier returned from injury with a sensational performance at Tranmere on Friday night, but could it spell the end of Kieran Trippier’s time in North London?

The form of Trippier has been one of the most disappointing aspects of Tottenham’s season, as the England international has failed to reach the heights of his incredible World Cup campaign.

The 28 year-old has been sloppy in defence all season, and put in one of the worst individual displays of the season in the recent defeat to Wolves.

Meanwhile, Aurier has gone from strength to strength this campaign, slowly but surely erasing the lapses of concentration and rash decisions that cost him dearly at times last season.

The 26 year-old, who joined from PSG for a cool £23m last summer, has been missing since the start of December with a groin injury, but didn’t miss a beat in his return on Friday.

Aurier vs Tranmere

Aurier opened the scoring with a stunning, swerving effort from the edge of the box, and added his second goal of the season as well, firing in four shots in total.

The 48-cap Ivory Coast international also showed once again that he is more reliable defensively than Trippier, leading the team in tackles, interceptions and blocked shots.

While the quality of opposition will cast some doubt over his dominant display, Aurier simply must be the first choice right back after the huge FA Cup win, and with the emergence of Kyle Walker-Peters as well it could be the end of Trippier’s time at Spurs.
