Tottenham Hotspur haven't been very active at all in the summer transfer market, but manager Mauricio Pochettino will surely want to up the ante in the coming days and weeks – especially with the window closing early on August 9 this year.

While you could argue that the Spurs squad doesn't need too much of an overhaul – especially with Harry Kane and Davinson Sanchez among the players that have signed new contracts since the end of the 2017/18 campaign – there will certainly be a few positions they need strengthening in if they are to compete with Manchester City and others for the Premier League title this term.

Those reinforcements could come in midfield in particular – the defensive, central and attacking midfield roles may need some work – especially with Mousa Dembele being heavily linked with a move to Inter Milan or the Chinese Super League.

Pochettino, whose signing of a 6ft 5in colossus would signal another transfer disaster for him, and Daniel Levy have already shown their ambition by smashing their wage budget to pay talisman Kane £200,000-a-week, and now they must make it a priority to make some marquee additions, in conjunction with letting individuals leave.

Here are two huge signings Tottenham must make this summer, as well as one major sale…

Should Dembele depart, one of Pochettino's priorities will be to bring in a replacement for the Belgian, and it would appear as though the Colombia international is one of his top targets.

While the Boca Juniors man showed some petulance in the defeat to England on Tuesday, he has also shown the qualities that he has for his country in Russia, and there seems little doubt that he would be a huge success in the Premier League because of the attributes that he has.

Alongside a player like Dier or Wanyama in the centre of the park, he would prove to be an inspired addition.

German media outlet Kicker reported in its print edition this week, via The Sun, that Tottenham have launched a bid for the young American, and the versatile attacker would be the perfect fit considering how Pochettino likes his teams to play.

The 19-year-old would be able to play on either flank or as a No.10, meaning he would be competing with the likes of Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli and Son Heung-Min in the starting XI.

Given the quality he already has and his potential for the future, he could be another player Pochettino transforms into a real superstar.

If Pochettino does sign another attacking midfielder/winger this summer, you would think that one player would have to move on, and it could well be Lamela.

Given Eriksen, Alli and Son are regular starters and Lucas Moura only joined during the January transfer window, you would have to fancy that the Argentine, who has two years remaining on his contract, would be the one ushered towards the exit door.

The 26-year-old often divides opinion among supporters because of his inconsistent displays, and perhaps it would be best for all parties if he was moved on before August 9.
