Tottenham Hostpur are keen to offer a new contract to Jan Vertonghen before the start of next season, according to football.london.

What's the word?

For the majority of the campaign, when contract talks have been mentioned on Twitter by Spurs supporters it is usually related to Toby Alderweireld's situation.

The Belgian is yet to sign fresh terms with the North London outfit, and according to a report in HLN last month, the club are willing to sell the 29-year-old this summer.

In complete contrast, Spurs plan to table a bumper new contract to Alderweireld's centre-back partner Vertonghen before the start of the season, reports football.london.

The publication claims that the hierarchy want the 99-cap Belgium international to help integrate young players into the team, and that the new deal is one of their top priorities for the summer.

How crucial is Vertonghen?

Tottenham fans have previously expressed concern about the prospect of losing Alderweireld.

However, if Vertonghen were to depart, the absence would be heavily felt, particularly considering how consistent he has been at the back this season.

The partnership between the two Belgian centre-backs has been a strong one, but injury has kept Alderweireld on the sidelines for more than three months.

In fact, the former Atletico Madrid player has missed 29 games in total, which has left Vertonghen carrying out leadership duties alongside Davinson Sanchez.

The fact that the 30-year-old has played in all but one of Tottenham's 34 Premier League games this season proves that he is a vital member of Mauricio Pochettino's team.

Will he sign on the dotted line?

Vertonghen has not given any indication publicly that he is looking for pastures new.

The Belgian, who is rated at £28.8m by Transfermarkt, knows that for the time being his first-choice position is unshaken.

Given that Tottenham will open a new chapter next season when they move into a brand new state-of-the-art stadium, it would be foolish for Vertonghen to abandon the club at this stage.

It appears that the North London outfit regard the stalwart as a key figure for the foreseeable future, and that stability should be appealing to Vertonghen.
