Villas-Boas confident despite transfer interest

Jermain Defoe, Tottenham

Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas believes Jermain Defoe will reject a move to the MLS, reports the Independent.

The English forward is wanted by FC Toronto, who are managed by Defoe’s former teammate Ryan Nelson.

And despite being the second choice striker under AVB at spurs, the Portuguese manager believes Defoe will stay at White Hart Lane this winter:

“I have seen in the press that there is reported interest (from Toronto), but we want the player to stay on and hold on to those last years of his contract,” the Spurs boss said.

“In the end the player is committed to the club and the club is committed to the player. The player at the moment is our top goal scorer and he is chasing the European record for the club as well which is important for his individual motivation.”

Nelsen, who played with Defoe at Spurs two seasons ago, is keen to bring the striker to the MLS, as he enters the last 18 months of his Spurs contract. But whilst AVB confirmed his belief that Defoe would stay at the club, he gave no hint that the Englishman would be offered a new deal.

Defoe is likely to start on the bench against Everton today, but could start in the Europa League on Thursday.

Would you offer Defoe a new deal?
