Javier Hernandez returned to the Premier League last summer when he signed for West Ham United from Bayer Leverkusen.

Unfortunately it was not the most triumphant return as he struggled to hold down a regular place in the team.

Recently, though, the Mexico international has found the back of the net, scoring twice in his last three outings for the Hammers.

Hernandez made his name at Manchester United, where he won two Premier League titles across a five-year spell, but it has emerged that the forward could have moved to Tottenham.

Andre Villas-Boas, who was in charge of the North London outfit between 2012 and 2013, has revealed that he tried to sign the attacking player.

According to the Portuguese coach, the 29-year-old turned Spurs down in favour of staying at Old Trafford.

Villas-Boas told ESPN:

"I was close to signing Chicharito, I still have a very good relationship with him. He always said: 'Coach, I'm going to fight for my position [at United] and I'll fight until the end.'

"I told him that he should give me an opportunity that he should come, but no. He believed in himself a lot and that also excited me. In the end we weren't able to come to an agreement."

Hernandez, who eventually left United in 2015 to join Leverkusen, has netted seven goals in 22 Premier League outings this season.
