Twitter Reacts: Newcastle fans react to Sunderland relegation

Sunderland could delay the inevitable no longer, as a 1-0 defeat to Bournemouth at the Stadium of Light confirmed their relegation to the second-tier of English football.

The Black Cats have been clinging onto their Premier League status for years and regardless of how they’ve performed this season, Championship football has been coming for some time.

Sunderland gave a slightly better account of themselves against the Cherries but were punished by an 88th minute goal from Joshua King, who is having a fine season in front of goal for Eddie Howe’s side.

Intriguingly, their relegation coincides with local rivals Newcastle United gaining promotion from the Championship, meaning the Tyne-Wear foes will essentially switch places for next season.

And unsurprisingly, those on Tyneside are nothing short of ecstatic about the situation, not only celebrating their return to the top tier but also Sunderland’s demise. Here’s a look at how Newcastle fans have reacted to the news on Twitter…
