Louis van Gaal has again opted to name Wayne Rooney is a midfield position for the Red Devils clash with West Ham, with Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao leading the line for Manchester United.

On the rare occasions when everyone is fit, the Dutchman has had a hard time fitting in all of United's superstars with the likes of Angel di Maria, Juan Mata and the aforementioned trio all offensive-minded players.

van Gaal isn't the first manager to deploy Rooney in a deeper role, with Sir Alex Ferguson toying with the idea fleetingly during his spell at the helm of the Red Devils, however, long-term it appears the former Bayern Munich views his captain as a midfielder.
