Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney currently sits at third place in the Red Devils’ all-time top goalscorers list, however, it may take him a little longer to overtake Bobby Charlton’s 249 goals if Louis van Gaal continues playing England’s captain in central midfield.
The Dutchman has again opted for the deeper role for Rooney in United’s early clash with Stoke City, as van Gaal continues to try and juggle his wealth of attacking options.
There’s no denying that Rooney can do a job in the middle of the park, after all, he bagged a brace against Newcastle United recently and also set up Robin van Persie with that wonderful long ball assist two seasons ago, which all but sealed the title for Sir Alex Ferguson in his final season.
Rooney’s goal tally speaks for itself, however, Twitter just cannot seem to decide whether LvG is right to play the Everton man in the CM role:
Will be good to see Herrera come back into the midfield. He has been lacking and gives Rooney the opportunity to press

Don’t like Rooney playing centre midfield, he does a good job but think he’s so much better up front

Rooney has provided five goals and two assists in his last seven Premier League appearances. Not bad from midfield…

Falcao should start on the bench for this game and Rooney moved up to partner RVP, Herrera filling in for him in midfield
