Manchester United look set to move for Blackpool midfielder Charlie Adam following the retirement of veteran Paul Scholes, according to caughtoffside.com.
After 676 appearances during 17 years at the club, Scholes has finally called it a day following United’s Champions League Final defeat at the weekend. Manager Sir Alex Ferguson apparently sees Scottish international Adam as the ideal replacement for the former England midfielder.
The 25-year old enjoyed a successful debut season in the Premiership scoring 12 goals in 35 League games. Liverpool moved for the player in January but now it seems United could be leading the race.
Manager Ian Holloway is reluctant to sell his captain and star player but might not be able to stand in Adam’s way following the club’s relegation. With a fee in the region of £10-15 million quoted Adam would be a much cheaper alternative to Inter’s Wesley Sneijder and Tottenham’s Luka Modric.
Adam has Champions League experience with Rangers and with 12 Scotland caps to his name is keen to remain in the top flight.
