Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert is waiting for news on the arm injury suffered by Stephen Ireland at Southampton on Saturday.
The 26-year-old midfielder impressed for Villa at St Mary’s but was forced off at half-time as the hosts went on to win 4-1. Ireland will have an X-ray on a reported broken arm that added insult to injury on a poor day for Villa.
Lambert told Sky Sports: “Stephen Ireland’s arm was giving him a problem. He’s a good player and in the first half we were a threat and he was at the forefront of it. We’ll have to have a look at it over the next few days.”
Villa next travel to the Etihad Stadium to face Premier League champions Manchester City in the Capital One Cup Third Round, and Lambert will be desperate to have attacking players of Ireland’s ilk fit to face a tough fixture.
