On Friday morning, West Ham United revealed that they had agreed to sell Ashley Fletcher to Championship club Middlesbrough for £6.5m.

The 21-year-old joined West Ham on a four-year contract last summer after leaving Manchester United following the expiration of his deal at Old Trafford.

The Englishman made 20 appearances for the Hammers during the 2016-17 campaign, but he started just two Premier League matches after struggling to make his mark.

On the face of it, gaining £6.5m for a player that only scored once last season seems to be a good deal, but it would be fair to say that the West Ham fans are not overly pleased with the departure.

Whether Fletcher would have played next season after the arrivals of Javier Hernandez and Marko Arnautovic is doubtful, and the young forward will now be tasked with helping Middlesbrough secure an immediate return to the Premier League.

It was tough for Fletcher to impress at the London Stadium last season, and a number of West Ham supporters would have liked for the former Man United forward to have been given more of a chance to stake a first-team position.
