It’s the claret and blue derby tonight at the Boleyn Ground, and indeed it will be the very last one at the famous old ground. This time, though, it’s between two clubs having two very different seasons.
West Ham fans are in dreamland right now, their side has given them reasons to be excited, though. In fact, it’s a very exciting time to be a Hammer. Not only are they moving into a new stadium, but the team is playing the kind of football usually associated with the club, not the Big Sam stuff we became used to seeing. The Hammers are entertaining, and surely a side worthy of turning out in a national icon like the Olympic Stadium week after week – who knows, win tonight and they may even get European football there next season to warm their new house.
For Villa, however, they’re looking increasingly like a team who are heading for the drop. No one wanted to take a chance and join them in this January window and every time you hear their manager speak he sounds more and more dejected. Remi Garde is the kind of man you’d associate with a club who like to play classy football, but the Championship is a league that suits the Big Sam type – maybe we’ll see Allardyce back to a club in claret and blue sooner than we thought!
