Sam Allardyce has praised the recent performances of West Ham midfielder Stewart Downing.
The Hammers boss has moved the winger in to a more central role in the last two games and has seen the 30-year-old make two assists to go with his top class performances.
Downing was heavily criticised during his time at Liverpool where he failed to register a single goal or assist in the season before his switch to East London.
But Allardyce has praised Downing’s contribution to a new look West Ham side that outplayed Liverpool in a 3-1 victory on Saturday evening,
He told West Ham’s official website: “Stewart’s been outstanding this season.
“Playing him in the middle has really worked. His talent is clear for everyone to see.
“The ball for Amalfitano’s goal was superb. He gets more touches in the centre, I’m sure he’s enjoying it.”
But Allardyce has called on his players to keep their feet on the ground, following a stunning performance and result against Liverpool at the Boleyn Ground, ahead of a trip to Old Trafford on Saturday.
“We could enjoy the result on Saturday but we need to make sure we get ready for Old Trafford, because that is a massive game,” he stressed.
“We can’t dwell on the victory for too long. We can definitely enjoy it, but on Monday we’ll get our feet back on the ground, and see what we can do at Old Trafford.”
