Charlton Athletic boss Lee Bowyer has confirmed his interest in signing loanee Josh Cullen from West Ham on a permanent basis, as quoted by Claret & Hugh.

What's the word?

While West Ham struggle to find their feet under Manuel Pellegrini, other members of the squad away on loan have settled in well with their new surroundings and have made a positive impression on loan with other clubs.

One of those players is midfielder Josh Cullen, who is spending the season with Charlton Athletic in League One and has started five league games for the Addicks this term - and Bowyer is impressed with the loanee.

Quoted by Claret & Hugh, the former Hammers star confirmed his desire to sign Cullen on a permanent basis but makes it clear any deal would be difficult to secure.

What was said?

"Obviously if they were interested in selling him then we would be interested in taking him. The problem we would probably have would be his wages.

"That could be a problem – we’ve got a budget. But maybe the owner or the new people, if they come in, might find it doable.

"He has definitely improved us. He is a very good player, for sure."

Will he leave?

With just three Premier League appearances for West Ham, 22-year-old Josh Cullen faces a crucial decision in the immediate future as he may need to leave the London Stadium in order to earn more regular playing opportunities.

Contracted until next summer according to Transfermarkt, an exit for free looks likely to take place but even then it would be difficult for Charlton to finance a permanent swoop for the Republic of Ireland U21 international, who former manager David Moyes said earlier this year he would have "no fear" playing in the first team.

Charlton, currently 11th in League One, were financially restricted in the summer and Bowyer was only able to sign free agents or loanees. While Cullen's contract situation raises the possibility of a move, it seems likely he will move elsewhere.
