The contract saga concerning Declan Rice looks set to rumble on as he will reject West Ham’s latest offer, ExWHUemployee told the latest episode of ‘The West Ham Way’ show (39:16).
Emerging onto the scene last season and becoming a crucial part of West Ham’s first-team set-up, Declan Rice has established himself as the best product of the Hammers’ academy in years and continues to court the attention of top-tier clubs.
The 19-year-old is currently locked in a contract saga with the East London side, as he seeks a significant increase on his current wages, but ExWHUemployee told ‘The West Ham Way show (39:16) that he believes the teenager will once again reject the offer on the table.
According to his comments, the latest offer on the table for Rice is worth a basic wage of £21k-a-week which can rise to around £40k-a-week with bonuses. However, that is still significantly less than a number of his team-mates.
“I don’t believe Declan is going to accept that. Yes, it is a lot of money for a 19-year-old, of course it is, but it’s not comparatively to [his] work colleagues.”
With it being widely understood that West Ham will walk away from negotiations until the end of the season if Rice rejects the latest offer on the table, major questions marks will be raised as to what this means for the player’s future.
West Ham’s firm stance is bold and puts the pressure on Rice, who will remain on his £3k-a-week deal until the end of the season if the Hammers do walk away from negotiations, but the danger is a breakdown in talks could cause irreparable damage and hugely affect his performances on the pitch.
The 19-year-old will certainly have plenty of suitors across the Premier League and the east London outfit need him in their ranks, so there is no chance of the teenager being ousted from the side. However, every game he plays will lead to further eyes being cast his way and West Ham could end up shooting themselves in the foot.
