So after taking over from Manuel Pellegrini, recently-appointed West Ham manager David Moyes has a win, a draw and a loss to his name.

The first match of that short run was a 4-0 victory over Bournemouth, before a narrow defeat to Sheffield United. Despite being unable to pick up a win against Everton on Saturday afternoon, it is another point closer to safety for the Hammers.

The London outfit actually had twice as many shots on target as their opponents, but they were unable to get themselves that all-important second goal.

Call yourself a West Ham expert? How much did each of these January signings cost?

Centre-forward Sebastien Haller was perhaps the most to blame. During the course of the 90 minutes, the 25-year-old had five shots and missed two big chances - his profligacy in front of goal no doubt cost the Hammers a victory.

He did win 13 of the 23 aerial duels he contested, but that will be of no use to Moyes if the former Eintracht Frankfurt man is unable to put the ball into the back of the net. Currently in the bottom half of the table with 23 points, they are in the midst of a relegation battle, and a goalscorer is what is needed to steer them away from danger.

And that man could very well be Gabriel Barbosa. The Irons are said to be interested in the Brazil international's services, and his arrival could give his boss exactly what he is looking for.

Last year, the 23-year-old was in terrific form for Flamengo in his homeland. In 41 matches, he bagged a huge 34 goals, whilst he also proved handy in terms of creating as well - he ended up with 11 assists. That follows on from a spell that saw him score 19 times in 42 matches for Santos.

Of course, he has only returned to his native country after a difficult time in Italy with Internazionale. They signed him for €25m in 2016, but he played just 10 times for the club and managed just one goal. It was a switch that just did not work out, and he appeared to struggle to settle into European football.

Even at the price of just £20m - which Moyes is reportedly prepared to pay - his inability to adapt to Italy would still see his arrival be something of a gamble. The Premier League, after all, is arguably the most competitive and physically demanding division on the planet - just look at how the Hammers had to contest 80 total duels in just 90 minutes against Everton on Saturday. Joining midway through the season can only make the process of settling down even more difficult.

Having said that, this a gamble worth taking for Moyes. Barbosa has shown that he has the ability to put the ball in the back of the net on a regular basis - particularly in his time in Brazil - and that is worth its weight in gold. He could be the difference between survival and the ultimate disappointment - relegation to the second tier.

Meanwhile, this West Ham snub could prove to be foolish.
