West Ham United are looking to sign Rangers centre-back Connor Goldson, as reported by Football Insider.

What's the story?

The Hammers still have work to do during the current window, but it has been suggested that they are already looking forward to potential summer dealings.

Interest is being shown in Goldson, who was signed from Brighton & Hove Albion 18 months ago for £3m, though it is said that it will take more than £6m to sign him.

Centre-back is one area that they will be looking at next summer, as David Moyes has been utilising a back three, while it is said that there are concerns over the futures of Angelo Ogbonna and Issa Diop, which could inspire them to make the transfer move.

A long time in waiting

Provided West Ham are still in the Premier League, and Goldson gets the move, it will probably feel like a long time coming for the 27-year-old.

Having helped Brighton earn their promotion to the Premier League, the centre-back ended up making just two starts and one substitute appearance in the top flight during the 2017/18 season, before being allowed to leave the Amex for Rangers.

He may feel that his form is worthy of a move to England's top tier, as he has been a fairly solid presence for Rangers, with his Europa League statistics from the current campaign so far showing that.

There may be some concern that his combined dribbled past and fouls committed per game total 1.1, while he makes 0.2 tackles.

However, his other statistics indicate that he can be a solid performer for the Hammers, considering he has made 6.5 clearances per game, while he also wins 4.7 aerial duels on average.

Another encouraging sign is that he should be comfortable with the ball at his feet, having completed 82% of his attempted passes in the European competition.

Considering the effectiveness he has shown on that stage, a return to the Premier League would likely be seen as the next step for him - one that he should be better prepared for than last time.
