West Ham United are showing an interest in signing Slavia Prague midfielder Tomas Soucek, as reported by football.london.

What's the story?

The Czech outfit value him at €25m [£21m], but it is suggested that West Ham could get him for half of that amount if they make a move.

While a deal has not been completed, the Hammers are confident that they will be able to secure the 24-year-old on a loan deal with an option to buy.

The Czech Republic international has recorded some impressive statistics in the Champions League this season, scoring two goals in six appearances, while also averaging 2.5 tackles, 2.5 interceptions, 2.8 clearances and 1 key pass per game.

This indicates the quality in his all-round game, which would definitely be useful for the Hammers.

Another midfield target

The Hammers are making centre-midfield a priority position for the rest of the January transfer window, as reported by ExWHUemployee on the West Ham Way Podcast 165.

This comes with Carlos Sanchez being the closest competition to Declan Rice and Mark Noble, despite having played just 113 minutes of Premier League football this campaign.

It was also reported during the podcast that the Hammers are showing interest in six midfielders: Franck Kessie, Ronaldo Vieira, Nahitan Nandez, Sander Berge, Steven Nzonzi and Joe Allen.

That Soucek is now being added to that list indicates that the Hammers have cast their net very wide, which should be considered a good thing, as it means that there are plenty of options and if one deal falls through there will be another target to approach.

However, with less than a week to go until the transfer deadline, there really needs to be a sense of direction in the Hammers' transfer strategy, especially when it is considered how much David Moyes requires another option in the middle.

It is all well and good having these targets, but there will likely be plenty of frustration if nobody is signed.

Meanwhile, West Ham could risk a buildup in one position with their reported transfer pursuit.
