West Ham United midfielder Tomas Soucek is following in Tomas Repka's footsteps in East London.

On the chalkboard

Soucek signed on loan from Slavia Prague during the January transfer window and has been thrown straight into things at London Stadium, starting against Brighton & Hove Albion and Manchester City.

The wider performances from these games have been underwhelming, as the Hammers walked away with one point from the two, but the 24-year-old has given a good account of himself during that time.

His performances have not been oozing finesse so far, but they have been spirited, whole-hearted and effective, in a way that's slightly reminiscent of Repka's time at West Ham.

This offers an indication that Soucek could possibly go on to follow in the cult hero's footsteps if West Ham stay up, which would likely see the option to buy that is in the deal triggered - even if he may not go on to have the same legacy.

Spirited performances

Repka went on to represent the club 179 times throughout his career, making just one assist in that entire time, while picking up a total of four red cards, which offers an indication into the style of play that he had.

However, he was revered by Hammers fans to the point where he was given a reception by the fans that brought him to tears.

Soucek is obviously a long way off from that stage, but there are early signs that he can become a popular figure among Hammers fans, even if he is not someone who has played with the most finesse so far.

For away day veterans only: Can you name all of these defunct stadiums?

In his two games, the 24-year-old has made an impressive seven tackles, six interceptions, five clearances and one block, while making two fouls and being dribbled past on one occasion.

He hasn't done too much on the ball though, making one key pass and maintaining a pass success rate of just 62.2%. There is definitely scope for that to improve considering one of those games was against Man City.

Even with that in mind, he has made a positive start to life at West Ham.

Meanwhile, West Ham fans' fury shows that David Gold, David Sullivan and Karren Brady made a massive blunder.
