According to reports in The Mirror, West Ham United are interested in signing Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud during the January transfer window, and while it would be a major signing for the club it would also give Manuel Pellegrini some major selection headaches.

The Mirror says that the Irons are long-term admirers of the Frenchman and wanted to bring him to the London Stadium when he left Arsenal, but he ended him moving to Stamford Bridge instead.

There is no doubt that the 2018 World Cup winner, who lead the line brilliantly for France in Russia, would want to be and deserves to be a regular starter for the east London club, and it would leave Pellegrini with a big predicament.

Marko Arnautovic has probably been the club's best and most important player ever since David Moyes switched him from the wing to a centre-forward role around this time last year, and he has become their talisman in terms of goals, assists and overall work rate.

It seems unlikely that the former Manchester City boss will turn away from a 4-3-3 formation that allows him to play Andriy Yarmolenko and Felipe Anderson with plenty of midfield cover behind them, and a player of Giroud's quality and stature has to spearhead the attack.

That is unthinkable when you think of how good Arnautovic has been, but the decision doesn't mean he would get dropped and he would likely replace Yarmolenko who would drop to the substitutes' bench.
