According to reports in The Mirror, new West Ham United boss David Moyes wants to make Brighton and Hove Albion Lewis Dunk, whose playing style is similar to that of John Terry, his first signing in the January transfer window.

What's the word, then?

Well, The Mirror says that Moyes will be looking to strengthen the leakiest backline in the Premier League – the Irons have conceded 23 goals in 11 top flight matches this season – in the New Year, and he believes Dunk would be the ideal addition.

The 25-year-old has been impressive in Brighton's solid start to the campaign, with The Mirror saying that there have been calls for him to be named in the England squad.

The report adds that West Ham may have to pay a huge fee to sign the centre-back though, after he only signed a new five-year contract with the Seagulls in August.

Why do West Ham want Dunk?

Moyes will want players that are willing to stand up and battle in the club's potential relegation battle, and that is exactly what the 25-year-old does.

While he may not be the quickest, he has shown on multiple occasions that he isn't afraid to put his body on the line for his team, and in many ways he is similar in style to John Terry.

According to Squawka, as well as winning 24 aerial duels in 11 Premier League games this season, the centre-back has also made 18 blocks, 21 interceptions and 68 clearances.

His average passing accuracy of 80% also shows that he can is handy on the ball.

Would he be a starter for them?

With Jose Fonte out in February through injury, Moyes certainly needs some competition for the likes of Winston Reid and Angelo Ogbonna in the centre-back positions – especially after some of the defensive showings this season.

It remains to be seen whether Moyes will play a three or four-man defence when he finally takes charge of his first match against Watford on Sunday, but Dunk would be confident that he would be a regular if he moved to the London Stadium.

Will they get him?

Well, it really depends on how much the West Ham board are willing to back their new manager, as Brighton certainly won't want to lose one of their key players halfway through the season.

The Irons will have to pay a huge fee – perhaps even a club-record amount – to tempt the Seagulls into selling the 25-year-old, and that seems unlikely to happen in January.
